Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) is a herbaceous perennial reaching typically 0.6–1 m in height, with leaves that are pinnate with toothed margins, producing slender racemes of small yellow flowers which open gradually from the base to the tip from midsummer. The flowering period usually lasts from June through to September, offering sustained forage for insects. After flowering, the plant sets small burr-like seed heads which aid natural reseeding.

In cultivation, agrimony prefers a well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun to partial shade. It establishes well in mixed wildflower swards and is tolerant of moderate dryness once mature. It may remain relatively discreet in early years but becomes more imposing as clumps develop. Over time, self-seeding can help maintain population without intervention.

Agrimony plays a beneficial role in plant communities, its root system helps to reduce soil erosion and compete with grasses, while its long flowering window supports pollinator networks.

Agrimony can be sown in either spring (March to May) or autumn (August to October), depending on your site conditions and preference.

Before sowing, clear away any existing vegetation and lightly rake the soil surface to create a suitable tilth. The seed should be broadcast evenly over the prepared area and then gently pressed into the surface, avoid burying them too deeply, no more than 2–3 mm is recommended.

Once sown, keep the area damp but not waterlogged, particularly during dry spells, as consistent moisture helps with germination. In the first year, growth may be modest, and flowering limited, but this is entirely normal as the plant focuses on establishing a strong root system.

Ongoing maintenance is low, once established, agrimony is drought-tolerant and will return year after year, it prefers low-nutrient soils, so avoid applying fertilisers which could encourage more dominant grasses.

For garden applications direct sow at 1g/m2. For overseeding existing meadow planting or for new sowings on larger areas sow at a maximum of 2g/m2.

Agrimony is ideal for wildflower margins, pollinator corridors, meadow planting, roadside verges, and restoration projects. Its long flowering period provides sustained nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. The structure of the plant also offers habitat and shelter for smaller invertebrates.

Q1: Will Agrimony self-seed readily?

A: Yes, once mature agrimony produces burr-like seedheads that can drop locally and regenerate. However, in dense swards some thinning might be needed to maintain balance.

Q2: Can I sow Agrimony under partial shade?

A: Agrimony prefers full sun but tolerates light shade (e.g. dappled sun). Avoid deep shade (where light is very limiting), as this may reduce flowering performance.

Q3: Does Agrimony compete with grasses aggressively?

A: It is relatively modest in its competitive ability. In fertile, vigorous grass swards it may struggle. It performs best in lower fertility soils or in managed mixtures where grass dominance is controlled.

Q4: Is Agrimony beneficial for bees and pollinators?

A: Absolutely. The yellow flowers attract a wide range of pollinators, bees, hoverflies, and other insects, providing a valuable food source over a prolonged season.
