Our Wildflower Mixture for Heavy Clay Soils contains a carefully selected blend of British native species which thrive in dense, moisture-retentive soils.

Ideal for full sun or partial sun/partial shade, the meadow species in this mix flower throughout the season, offering visual interest and vital habitat for pollinators and other insects year-round. Perfect for gardeners and landowners keen to improve biodiversity without extensive soil modification or cultivation.

Best sown in early autumn or late spring, this mix provides an evolving display, with some species flowering in the first year and others establishing more fully from year two. With minimal upkeep required, it’s a smart and sustainable way to green up even the most stubborn ground.

This mix is excellent for wildlife-friendly borders, field margins, habitat corridors, and garden naturalisation projects. It creates critical forage and breeding spaces for bees, butterflies, beetles, and birds. The diversity of flowering times ensures a long nectar season, supporting local ecosystems and increasing your garden’s environmental value.

Sow in autumn (September–November) or spring (March–May) into bare, weed-free soil. Clay soils may need light preparation so rake or break up the surface if heavily compacted. Avoid adding fertiliser, as wildflowers thrive in nutrient-poor conditions.

Scatter evenly and press the seeds lightly into the soil surface, but do not cover deeply as direct light is critical for germination. Water during dry spells in the early establishment phase, but avoid waterlogging. Full flowering often occurs in the second year, with increasing diversity and display over time.

Cut back in late summer after seed set to encourage regrowth and natural reseeding.

Q1: Can wildflowers really grow in clay soil?
A: Yes. This mix is specifically designed for heavy clay. It includes robust native species that tolerate wetter, denser soils.

Q2: Will I get flowers in the first year?
A: Yes. Some of the perennials may flower in year one, but the display and diversity typically peak from year two onwards.

Q3: Do I need to prepare the soil?
A: For best results, clear existing vegetation and lightly break up the top layer to reduce compaction, especially in heavy clay areas.

Q4: Will this attract bees and butterflies?
A: Absolutely. This mix includes high-nectar species that are magnets for pollinators throughout the growing season.
