California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a fast-growing annual wildflower prized for its bright, satiny flowers and finely divided, blue-green foliage. Flowering from May through to September, it produces a continuous display of cheerful blooms that open in sunlight and gently close in the evening or dull weather.

Typically reaching heights of 20–40 cm, California poppy is well suited to borders, containers, gravel gardens, and wildflower meadows. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, particularly in dry or sandy conditions where other plants may struggle. Once established, it often self-seeds freely, returning year after year in a naturalised setting without becoming invasive.

California poppy can be sown in either spring (March to May) or autumn (August to October), depending on your site conditions and preference.

Before sowing, clear away any existing vegetation and lightly rake the soil surface to create a suitable tilth. The seed should be broadcast evenly over the prepared area and then gently pressed into the surface, avoid burying them too deeply, no more than 2–3 mm is recommended.

Once sown, keep the area damp but not waterlogged, particularly during dry spells, as consistent moisture helps with germination. In the first year, growth may be modest, and flowering limited, but this is entirely normal as the plant focuses on establishing a strong root system.

Ongoing maintenance is low, once established, Californian Poppy is drought-tolerant and will return year after year, it prefers low-nutrient soils, so avoid applying fertilisers which could encourage more dominant grasses.

For garden applications direct sow at 1g/m2. For overseeding existing meadow planting or for new sowings on larger areas sow at a maximum of 2g/m2.

California poppy is ideal for adding vibrant colour to wildflower meadows, borders, gravel gardens, and container displays. Its long flowering period provides a valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects throughout the summer months.

Perfect for informal planting schemes, it combines beautifully with other drought-tolerant wildflowers and is especially useful in areas where low maintenance and water efficiency are key. Its ability to self-seed makes it a reliable choice for ongoing seasonal colour and biodiversity support.
