Calendula (Calendula officinalis), commonly known as Pot Marigold, is a hardy annual wildflower recognised for its bright, daisy-like flowers in shades of orange and yellow. Flowering from May to October, it provides a long-lasting and reliable display, with blooms that can be regularly picked to encourage even more flowering.

Growing to a height of 30–60 cm, Calendula is ideal for borders, containers, allotments, and wildflower gardens. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it will tolerate a range of conditions, including poorer soils. Its soft, aromatic foliage adds additional texture, while its tendency to self-seed allows it to naturalise gently in suitable areas.

Calendula is also well known for its traditional use in herbal remedies and as an edible flower, making it a popular choice for kitchen gardens as well as ornamental planting.

Calendula can be sown in either spring (March to May) or autumn (August to October), depending on your site conditions and preference.

Before sowing, clear away any existing vegetation and lightly rake the soil surface to create a suitable tilth. The seed should be broadcast evenly over the prepared area and then gently pressed into the surface, avoid burying them too deeply, no more than 2–3 mm is recommended.

Once sown, keep the area damp but not waterlogged, particularly during dry spells, as consistent moisture helps with germination. In the first year, growth may be modest, and flowering limited, but this is entirely normal as the plant focuses on establishing a strong root system.

Ongoing maintenance is low, once established, Calendula is drought-tolerant and will return year after year, it prefers low-nutrient soils, so avoid applying fertilisers which could encourage more dominant grasses.

For garden applications direct sow at 1g/m2. For overseeding existing meadow planting or for new sowings on larger areas sow at a maximum of 2g/m2.

Calendula is perfect for borders, cottage gardens, allotments, and wildflower mixes, adding reliable colour and ecological value. Its open, accessible flowers are highly attractive to bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators, while also supporting beneficial insects that help control garden pests.

Ideal for companion planting in vegetable plots, Calendula can help draw in pollinators and improve biodiversity. Its long flowering season makes it a valuable nectar source across much of the growing season.
