A native wildflower and grass mix formulated to reflect the species composition of unimproved lowland meadows on loamy soils. This Loamy Meadow Mix is all about working with nature, not against it. It brings together a lovely range of UK-native wildflowers, from the dependable Common Knapweed and Oxeye Daisy to the delicate Musk-Mallow and Wild Carrot. Alongside them, a careful selection of fine-leaved grasses provides structure and year-round greenery.

Wildflowers like Yellow Rattle play a special role in the mix by gently reducing the vigour of the grasses, creating space for other plants to thrive – nature’s own balance-keeper. Together, the flowers and grasses support a wide range of insects and birds, helping to build a healthier garden ecosystem.

This mix is ideal if you're hoping to create a more natural space, whether it’s a full meadow, a wildlife patch in your garden, or a border with a wilder feel. Over time, it’ll evolve and shift, becoming more established, more diverse, and more beautiful each year.

Sow your Loamy Wildflower Meadow Mix in either spring (March–May) or early autumn (August–October), when soil temperatures are just right for germination.

Start by clearing the ground of weeds and grass, then rake to create a fine, crumbly surface. Mix the seed with a little dry sand to help spread it evenly, then scatter by hand. Lightly firm the seed in by walking over the area or using a roller works well. In dry spells, a light watering helps, but there’s no need to soak it.

In the first year mow it down to 5–10cm every couple of months to keep weeds in check and help the perennials get established. From the second year onwards, just one cut a year – usually after flowering, around late July or August – is enough. Always remove the cuttings to keep soil fertility low and flowers thriving.

This mix is perfect for gardens, orchards, community spaces, or countryside projects – really, anywhere with loamy soil where you'd like to invite nature in. It provides food and shelter for all kinds of wildlife, from bees and butterflies to seed-loving birds. Q1: Can I use this mix in heavy clay or sandy soils?
A: This particular blend is made for loamy soils. If your soil is very clay-heavy or sandy, look for a mix designed specifically for those conditions.

Q2: Will it flower in the first year?
A: You might see a few blooms, but don’t worry if it’s mostly green to begin with as the real display comes from year two onwards, once the perennials settle in.

Q3: Do I need to feed the meadow or water it?
A: Not at all, in fact, less is more. Wildflowers thrive in low-fertility soils, and once established, they’re generally drought-tolerant.

Q4: Will it spread or take over my garden?
A: No, this mix is well balanced and slow-growing. It won’t become invasive, and it can be mown to contain it if needed.
