Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi) is a moisture-loving perennial wildflower known for its deeply divided, star-like pink flowers. Blooming from May to July, it adds movement and colour to naturalistic planting schemes, wildflower meadows, and wildlife-friendly gardens.

This plant is especially valuable in wet or boggy ground, where it helps provide habitat and nectar for pollinators.

Ragged Robin reaches around 30–60 cm in height and pairs well with other water-loving wildflowers such as Meadowsweet, Cuckooflower, and Marsh Marigold.

Ideal for naturalising in wetter areas, it performs best in full sun to partial shade and moist, fertile soil. Over time, it will establish clumps and return each spring, with minimal need for maintenance beyond occasional thinning.

Sow Ragged Robin seeds in autumn or spring onto damp, prepared soil. For best results, scatter seeds thinly over bare ground, press lightly to ensure good contact, and keep the area moist. Avoid burying seeds deeply, as they need light to germinate.

Seeds typically germinate in 2–4 weeks. Ragged Robin prefers full sun or partial shade and consistently damp soils, perfect for pond sides, marshy borders, or rain gardens. Once established, the plant requires little care and will return each year, slowly forming larger clumps.

To encourage spread and maintain plant health, divide clumps every few years in early spring or late autumn.

For garden applications direct sow at 1g/m2. For overseeding existing meadow planting or for new sowings on larger areas sow at a maximum of 2g/m2.

Ragged Robin is well-suited to wildlife gardens, wetland margins, pond edges, and naturalistic planting schemes. Its open, nectar-rich flowers are especially attractive to bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. As a native species, it supports a healthy garden ecosystem and is perfect for restoring habitats or enhancing biodiversity in wetter environments.
